Harrison talks 50’s and 60’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and Modern twists to the sound with Mikey Votano!!!
Who do you think is the most underrated music artist from the 50’s/60’s and is there anyone you think is overreacted?
Mikey Votano – Underrated is definitely Wanda Jackson! She’s amazing & has a killer vocal. I’m not sure all that many people who aren’t familiar with 50s rock ’n’ roll even know who she but she’s a legend for those of us that do. I can’t imagine it would have been easy being a female rock ’n’ roll artist in the 50’s so extra love to Wanda for that too.
Overrated, don’t hate me for saying this, but, Elvis. Before you judge, hear me out, I love Elvis, his showmanship & vocals are all insanely impressive. It’s just how much he is revered above all other artists from the era rather than as an equal with the other greats such as Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Wanda Jackson, etc. Again, just want everyone to note, I am a big fan of Elvis.
When you hear a song do you have a sort of filter in your head that you hear it in a 50’s/60’s style?
Mikey Votano – Ha! Not originally, but lately I think I may have developed one. I have caught myself a few times hearing a track on the radio & instantly thinking it’d work well with a rock ’n’ roll vibe.
Have you tried to cover any modern songs in this style and they just didn’t work?
Mikey Votano – Definitely. I’ve tried to work on The Killer’s ‘Mr Brightside’ a few times but keep putting it down. There are some musical traits from the 50’s/60’s which make certain melodies & chord progressions a little more difficult to make sound as good. I’m sure they can be done but perhaps need a little more time to arrange to a point which I’m happy with.
Are there any songs from the past 6 months you’d love to cover in your style?
Mikey Votano – YES! I’m a huge fan of ‘Sunday Best’ by Surfaces & ‘Don’t Start Now’ Dua Lipa. Both killer tracks I’d love to perform in a vintage style. I may even be working on one of them as we speak.
If you could bring back any star from the 50’s/60’s – who do you think would still succeed in the modern charts and why?
Mikey Votano – Eddie Cochran & I think the fact that he wouldn’t succeed in the charts today is one of the main reasons for bringing him back. His style is dirty, raw & real. There’s so many great artists today, playing so many different styles of music that I’d love to bring someone back that I don’t hear anything similar to at the moment.
WWE have been on fire creatively during the Covid 19 crisis and this latest SummerSlam is up there with the best live entertainment of 2020. The Thunderdome is a thing of beauty and the live video audience technology is like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. Highly Recommended!!!

I was very keen for Con and Harrison to see this movie. I like the idea that youngsters get to see stories such as Rocks, I Daniel Blake and Blue Story as it gives blessed Kidz like my own a prospective on how lucky they are and what other families are dealing with on a daily basis. This will be a very tough watch for many young people – but I think an essential view for many. Rocks is a challenging but wonderful story – Highly Recommended!!!

Harrison talks strange sounds and best venues to play with Flex FM DJ Jodie Weston!!!
What’s your favourite song to play as part of your DJ set and at what point in the set do you play it?
Jodie Weston – I love the song “Losing It” by Fisher, that’s always a good one to get people on their feet and great crowd engagement. I usually drop it right in the middle of my set to keep everyone involved
If you could co-produce a track with any other DJ who would it be and why?
Jodie Weston – Probably Joel Corry because he has a reality tv background like me. I think it would be a good collab!
He has a huge fan base, so the song would deffo be a massive hit!
What has been the strangest sound you’ve ever had when mixing tracks and why did it happen?
Jodie Weston – Oh sometimes the decks can play up and go into an emergency loop where the track is stuck on the same 4 beats of music and keep going round and round. Of course it always seems to happen at the worst point imaginable!
When that occurs it’s very stressful as it can be a problem with a cable around the back or a usb, but you don’t know until you try a few different things, which takes time and sometimes the cdjs need to be switched off completely or reset. It happened to me on my 3rd ever radio show and my heart sank. I tried to style it out by laughing it off which is probably the best way to deal with it. One of the team came running in to help me reboot the equipment but yeah it definitely made my heart skip a beat and I was anxious for the rest of the show!
What’s the easiest and the hardest thing about DJ’ing?
Jodie Weston – The easiest thing for me is picking the tracks because I’ve always had a good ear for music and know how to manipulate moods through music. I know which songs are going to make people happy, reflective, full of life, nostalgic etc and which songs sound good together or have a similar vibe.
The hardest part is knowing which part of the song to transition at and when to take the original track out, but after you’ve dj’d for awhile especially in a particular genre of music like I play (house), songs tend to have drops at particular points of the song and it’s always good to take the original track out just before the drop of the new song because It makes the transition to the next track really clean!
Where are your top 5 places to DJ?
Jodie Weston – I have played at embargo Republica in Chelsea that was super fun, it’s where a lot of the Made In Chelsea cast hang out!
I love DJing on radio (Flex FM) because I get to interact with the listeners and talk whilst playing my favourite songs
I played at a boat party on the river Thames just before the lockdown, that was a fun experience especially as the boat was swaying side to side!
I would love to play in Las Vegas one day as it’s my favourite city in the world, that’s the ultimate goal!
I would also love to play at Creamfields because that’s the creme de la creme Of Uk Dance Music Festivals, that place is huge!
Catch Jodie Weston’s new show ‘The Dollhouse’ on Flex FM!!!
