The Banishing – Ghost Stories & Religion in Horror with Director

By HOME ENT, INTERVIEWS

The Banishing – Harrison talks Ghost Stories and Religion in Horror with Director Christopher Smith!!!

If you could Direct a remake of any classic Horror – which film would you choose and why?

I’ve often thought about doing a remake of Nosferatu. I’ve always loved the design of the Count in that film. Even when it was remade with Klaus Kinski or used in Salem’s Lot, there is something inherently scary about the Nosferatu vampire. I think Nosferatu would be the perfect way to reboot the vampire genre.

Have you or anyone close to you ever had a paranormal experience and if so what happened?

No. Sorry for the boring answer but to me all supernatural events are actually events that are happening within the mind of the person. That’s why I love The Shining so much. The hotel is Jack Torrence’s mind. If someone tells me they’re haunted I take it to mean they’re not well.

I always find ghost stories far scarier to watch than slasher movies. Do you agree with this and if so what do you think it is about ghost stories that makes them so scary?

I actually find slasher movies more scary but I find ghost stories more interesting.  Ghosts are essentially you being tormented by your own past. Something of the past is invading the present, just like bad memories, though in their scariest manifestation.

Why do you think religion is regularly used to enhance the scare factor of so many horror movies?

I think religion is in human DNA,  whether your are a believer or not. Anything that successfully taps into that deeply ingrained belief, unsettles something within us and makes us uncomfortable. There’s also something inherently filmic about rituals of any kind.

The ending of The Banishing makes it feel very open to a sequel. Are there any plans to develop the story further?

I certainly would like to explore  Harry Reed more, as I believe Shaun Harris created a really interesting character. For me the end is very much about the awakening of violence both within the characters and the world as a whole. The idea that prejudice can all too easily be dug up and harnessed within people  to revolting ends.

The Pandemic has given people extra time to be creative. Has the extra time been useful to you and do you think the quality in the films made over the coming years will be better due to Filmmakers having more time to develop their ideas?

Only time will tell. I imagine there will be a spate of twisted films, although you never can tell, perhaps people are so tired of feeling miserable that swathe of comedies are about to flood the market!

Tactic – 15 Minutes To Self-Destruct

By GAMES

Tactic – 15 Minutes To Self-Destruct review by Sophie

’15 Minutes to Self-Sestruct’ by Tactic is a intense and exhilarating board game that focuses on teamwork, communication and a throw of the dice.

The game is set on the SS Nebula, a space ship that is set to self district after a meteor impact. The basics of the game is to move through the board, opening doors and turning on all of the switches, to reach the escape pods before your 15 minute countdown runs out.

Inside the box you get the game board, 4 game characters, 24 door tiles, 13 switch tiles, one plastic control module, four nonslip stickers, a phone raising board, 2 dice and the rules/instructions.  You can download the free app from the AppStore or Googleplay.

I personally love the fact that this game has focused on the aspect of teamwork, unlike your typical board game. It’s a fast and frantic game with just the right amount of building pressure as the counter ticks down.  I think the app is a fantastic idea as it really creates a tense and panicked atmosphere which really adds to the whole aspect of the game.

I like this game and would give it 5 stars as it is very good for entertaining guests and passing time with others.

PlayStation 5 – Demon Souls

PlayStation 5 – Demon Souls

When announced back in June, the Demon Souls remake had fans in a frenzy, I mean what’s not to love about such a classic PS3 game being updated and adapted for modern technology, and, for the most part, it is a highly successful addition to the Souls franchise.

The graphics are stunning and I would go so far to say this Demon soul is a visual masterpiece. From attack animations to ways the objects around you break, everything is perfect in this department. Settings leave you mesmerised and the flash of Dragons flying by as they breathe fire obstructing your way is always a spectacle.

As someone who had never played any of the Souls games, I was excited to take on the challenge, which is synonymous with the Souls name and compared to games today, it definitely did not disappoint. I even pride myself on the fact I play almost all games on the hardest difficulty, however, Demon Souls was a different beast. Nevertheless, I pushed on, largely due to the fact my pride had been hurt after finding out it was the easiest game in the series, and soon learned the patterns and combinations needed to deal with the foot soldiers and bosses after many, many, MANY deaths.

It was largely a great experience with both the puzzle aspect and combat being fun, yet I found the lack of checkpoints, which I later found was a decrease from the original, making the game slightly too intense for my liking yet many hardcore fans will welcome this change. I found boss fights to be a blast, with no one fight being anything like the other, yet felt that it could have had a more linear structure in terms of the difficulty. The soundscaping and audio are amazing, pulling you in and not letting go from its continuous intensity which when complemented by the visuals, make the game one of the best out on PS5 right now.

Available on PlayStation 5 19/11/20 (PEGI 18) 4 Stars

Youth #Gottit View:

This certainly lives up to its reputation of being one of the hardest games on the market and it may be a little too frustrating for some gamers. The graphics are stunning on the PlayStation 5!!!
