Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1 review

The Mortal Kombat franchise is now at its 12th installment, yet this game isn’t like any of the others. Long-time Mortal Kombat fans who have played and completed the MK11 story, and will know that this game resides in a completely different timeline from the previous games..

The last Mortal Kombat story left off with Liu Kang resetting the timeline to how he sees fit, with many major differences. This is because, unlike Kronika in MK11, he didn’t seek to perfect the universe and thus let it play out organically, with the exception of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, both of whom they were meant to be unable to learn any magic and live their lives as simple men. However, Kronika is somehow back and has altered their paths, and Liu Kang must find a way to stop them before they take over both the Outerworld and the Earthrealm.

The story plays extended cutscenes and then puts you into 1-on-1 fights with set characters, the character of whom changes every Four fights. This means that the story is perfect for beginners who aren’t familiar with the game, as it allows you to play with every character and learn all of their various moves and decide who to continue the game with as your favourite.

This story is filled with a lot of twists and is really entertaining. Pair that with the “Test Your Might” section being back, where you spam buttons to complete sections in the game. This is a part of the game I love to play and find really entertaining to watch others play too.

The combat, of course, is spectacular. Mortal Kombat strives to be one of the most violent video game franchises of all time, and this one is no different. The iconic fatalities and brutality of the final finish moves are still in the game. And there’s more gore and carnage than ever before.

Mortal Kombat 1 introduces Kameo fighters, of which you can push a button to have them use a move in the game. These Kameo fighters can perform fatalities as well as fatal blows, massively adding to the new games variety during combat (Sorry Kombat). And while talking about the variety, I can’t not mention the amazing arsenal of characters this game has to offer.

Unlike the previous games, many of these playable characters are brand new. However, we see the return of many old favorites we haven’t seen in years, and even some very exciting characters from other franchises like Omni-Man or Homelander that are entering in the game at later stages.

Another staple of Mortal Kombat is the additional game modes. These come in the tower, which lets you choose a character and play through an arsenal of enemies to unlock a secret ending for your character. Invasions, which lets you fight between modes, unlocking items for your fighters. And finally as I mentioned earlier, Test Your Might which has you spam buttons to unlock usable items in the game. Now, add these to the local and online play, and you’ll find yourself with plenty to do and play – it’s unlikely you will ever be left to feel bored!

Finally, as with most games nowadays, the variety of cosmetics also includes an item shop, which refreshes periodically and allows you to customise your characters to your liking. An essential option for the modern gamer!

In general, there aren’t many negatives in this game, other than minor balancing issues between characters that seem slightly weaker than they should be and some fighters that seem almost a bit too strong. In general, it’s very much a “play your way” type of game in the sense that every character can become a force to be reckoned with, when you become good with them. My only minor problem with the game, is that you can no longer choose who you want to play as in the Mortal Kombat story mode.

However, in general, this game looks gorgeous, plays amazingly, and has an incredible story mode. It’s easily a must own for both new and old fans of the franchise!!!

The Mortal Kombat Universe has reset (Hence the Mortal Kombat 1 and not Mortal Kombat 12) and all of our favourite fighting characters are back. All new story mode, characters and obviously grossly brilliant finishing moves. Perfect fun and escapism – Highly Recommended!!!

PlayStation 5 – The Nioh Collection

PlayStation 5 – The Nioh Collection

Set in 1600’s Japan, ‘The Nioh Collection’ follow the adventures of William Adams as he pursues the sorcerer Edward Kelley.

Both games are action packed with lots of blood, gore and a multitude of Monsters to defeat as you navigate through the various levels.

Graphically this newly updated version of the two ‘Nioh’ games look beautiful – but both are very challenging to conquer.

Personally I really enjoyed the games – but found them very hard. This is definitely a game for the die hard fans of the franchise and any gaming ‘Completionists’ that like to play everything on the hardest level.

Available on PlayStation 5 5/2/21 (PEGI 18) 4 Stars

PlayStation 5 – Watch Dogs Legion

PlayStation 5 – Watch Dogs Legion

After 5 long years, Ubisoft finally ventured to London once again when creating their brand new open-world game in Watchdogs: Legion, and whether you love it or hate it, one thing you cannot deny is the guts of Ubisoft for this one. The major change with Legion compared to any of the other games in the Watchdogs is that the story doesn’t revolve around a single main character or even characters at that. The heroes of the story are the city of London itself, everyone from flamboyant street magicians to drone operating builders, Watchdogs: Legion has it all for you to play, with this vast character playability being one of its most polarising aspects.

This introduction of no true lead does sacrifice classic open-world RPG features as I really missed the skill tree aspect within the game and the wealth of abilities contained within one character. However, by no means is it all negatives with a key part of the game being the recruitment and discovery of new types of people with unique character builds and personalities installed within almost every one. At first, this seemed fun, bringing about a new take to the mission, yet after a few hours, I felt the recruitment missions, usually regarding beating up a mob boss or destroying blackmail, to become monotonous and somewhat boring, however, this is the price to pay when having such a wealth of playable personas.

The story itself is ok, bringing about a few thought-provoking topics including privatized police and other such political ideals yet much like the recruitment missions I felt a lot of to feel like a task in order to get to the good bits rather than a captivating journey to the end goal. The bad guys themselves, are pretty well developed and make you genuinely want to end them which is always good, with a standout character being Mary Kelly, the sadistic head of the London mob. However, the main enemies are both Albion and Zero Day, one a private military on the hunt for Dead Sec and the other a terrorist organization responsible for the bombings around London and the framing of Dead Sec.

The setting itself is beautiful as well as being terrifying. The amazing setting of London is really done justice within the game as I found myself racing around for hours finding my favorite monuments and sights. The not so pretty bit are the thousands of drones patrolling the skies and the near-future setting becomes a battleground whenever you put on your mask due to instantly being detected by the police drones. Combat is fun with each character having their own abilities to add and Hitmen especially are very fun to play.

All in all, Watchdogs: Legion is certainly a fun playing experience with a good story and amazing setting up to par with some of Ubisoft’s best, yet personally the removal of a central protagonist wasn’t a great decision as missions seemed to become repetitive due to the lack of character development in both the combat and personality wise. However, the large playable cast definitely has its benefits but I feel they don’t quite outweigh the negatives.

Available for PlayStation 5 17/11/20 (PEGI 18) 3 Stars
